Jazz Loft Pledges Quick Turnaround on Vail-Leavitt Renovation, Town Boards Get to Work, Repair Café Comes to Jamesport

Good Morning!
• We're expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 66 degrees and a west wind 8 to 11 miles per hour. We're expecting overnight showers, with a low around 53. Showers will continue into Wednesday, with a high temperature around 66 degrees. Thursday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 62 and a 30 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m.
• As Riverhead Town gets closer to turning over the keys to the historic Vail-Leavitt Music Hall to the Stony Brook-based The Jazz Loft, leaders of the non-profit music organization say they believe they can have the building ready for a soft opening in January of 2026. Read More.
• In East Hampton this season, Democratic Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez is running unopposed. The three Town Board candidates vying for two seats shared their vision for the future of East Hampton in an Oct. 15 Zoom debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork. • The Southold Town Board meets in private executive session at 9 a.m. today, followed by a work session that is anticipated to start at noon, at which the board will discuss the town's 2026 budget, the town's stormwater programs, zoning and cell service, accessory dwelling units, emergency management and the town's 2026 calendar. • The East Hampton Town Board is slated to discuss the ChangeHampton garden at Town Hall and hear updates on aquaculture, beaches and the building department, as well as discuss the New York State HCR Manufactured Homes Program and recreational facilities at its 11 a.m. work session this morning at Town Hall. • The Riverhead Town Board is slated to authorize litigation against the New York State Office of Cannabis Management and Cannabis Control Board over its position on overruling Riverhead's zoning restrictions for cannabis dispensaries at its 6 p.m. regular meeting this evening. • The Southampton Fire Department hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive today from noon to 6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.
• Start collecting your broken items today! The North Fork Environmental Council will hold a Repair Café this Saturday, Oct. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the George Young Community Center in Jamesport, where volunteer repair coaches will be on hand for mending and fixing, and to offer guidance on how to take care of your stuff.
