Burn Ban, The Future of Bailie Beach, North Fork Pipeline Hearings, Active Aging, Exploring the Universe

Good Morning!
• We're expecting patchy fog before 9 a.m. today, with otherwise cloudy skies through mid morning, gradually clearing, with a high temperature near 78 degrees and a calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 miles per hour. It will be mostly clear overnight, with a low around 56. Tuesday will be sunny, with a high near 77. We're expecting rain on Wednesday, mainly before 2 p.m., with a high near 72. Thank you to the National Weather Service for continuing to provide this vital information during the government shutdown.
• Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced a statewide burn ban is in effect starting Oct. 2 due to increased fire risk and continued dry conditions. The ban will be in effect for 14 days from Oct. 2 to Oct. 15 and will be re-evaluated prior to expiration. Find Out More.
• With the delayed dredging of Mattituck Inlet in mind, the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association will hold a public forum on “What is the Future of Bailie Beach and the Mattituck Inlet” this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Mattituck Park District’s headquarters at Veterans Beach on Peconic Bay Boulevard. • The Suffolk County Water Authority will be holding three hearings this week on whether the agency can deem itself exempt from local land use board review in the construction of the proposed North Fork Pipeline. Hearings are scheduled to be held Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Suffolk County Water Authority’s Westhampton Building at 624 Old Riverhead Road in Westhampton Beach, on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Southold Town Recreation Center at 970 Peconic Lane in Peconic, and on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Riverhead Public Library at 330 Court Street in Riverhead. • Peconic Landing in Greenport hosts the International Council on Active Aging’s Active Aging Week, a national celebration dedicated to showcasing the benefits of living well at every age, with free exercise classes, seminars and cultural events for the community all week. Find Out More.
• The Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt hold their monthly full moon hike this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the South Fork Natural History Museum — this month's moon is known as the "Hunter's Moon," because historically hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to eat the fallen grain on fields that had been harvested. • This Thursday, Oct. 9, the Hamptons Observatory presents a free, virtual lecture by astrophysics professor Dr. Charles Liu, a professor of astrophysics about the newest international earth-based astrophysical facility, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and how you can be involved in its mission to explore and understand some of the Universe’s biggest mysteries. Find Out More.
