Good Morning!
• We're expecting showers and possibly a thunderstorm today, with a high temperature near 72 degrees and a southwest wind 11 to 14 miles per hour, becoming north in the afternoon. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch are possible. Skies will clear overnight, with a low aroudn 48. Thursday and Friday will be sunny, with highs in the low 60s.
• An effort is on to convince the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to fund a study needed for a major Army Corps of Engineers dredging project at Mattituck Inlet. Find Out More.
• An effort is afoot for the second year in a row to get New York Governor Kathy Hochul to sign a bill banning the harvesting of horseshoe crabs for bait and biomedical purposes. Read More.
• The Peconic Estuary Partnership is holding a virtual Mini-Grant Q&A session this afternoon at 2 p.m. PEP has funds available for projects that assist in accomplishing its 2020 Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan goals of clean waters for ecosystem health and safe recreation. Proposals will be considered for up to $50,00 per project. Here's the Zoom link.
• The Center for Advocacy, Support and Transformation (CAST) in Southold will hold a Volunteer Orientation this evening at 5:30 p.m. at their headquarters at 53930 Main Road in Southold. CAST provides services for the community ranging from a food pantry and housing and utility assistance to career education programs and cultural events. • This evening, the Suffolk County Water Authority will be holding the second of three hearings on whether the agency can deem itself exempt from local land use board review in the construction of the proposed North Fork Pipeline. Tonight’s hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the Southold Town Recreation Center at 970 Peconic Lane in Peconic, and tomorrow's hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the Riverhead Public Library at 330 Court Street in Riverhead. • The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society will hold a presentation on how you can help cold-stunned sea turtles this evening at 6 p.m. at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. Find Out More.
• Tomorrow, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force will give its annual Helen Wright Prince Community Award to Rafael Morais, a community liaison and bilingual educator at the Mattituck Senior High School Library.
