Veterans Day Events, Reaction to ICE Raids, Riverhead Recount, Southold Passes Wetland Changes, Agog Over Gazoz

Good Morning!

• We're expecting rain this morning, then a chance of showers after noon, with mostly cloudy skies and a high temperature near 59 degrees, with light and variable winds becoming northwest 5 to 9 miles per hour. We're expecting wind and areas of frost Tuesday morning between midnight and 4 a.m., with a freeze watch in effect from 1 to 9 a.m. During the day Tuesday, we're expecting mostly sunny skies, a high near 46 and a west wind 13 to 20 miles per hour, gusting to 31. We're expecting partly sunny skies on Wednesday, with a high near 53.

• Tomorrow is Veterans Day, and services honoring veterans are planned all throughout the East End. Calverton National Cemetery's annual ceremony has been cancelled due to the federal government shutdown. Here are the details of the other services.

• About 100 community members gathered across from the Hampton Bays Firehouse Friday morning in protest of federal agents who conducted broad immigration sweeps throughout Hampton Bays and Westhampton last Wednesday. Another community gathering is planned on Friday, Nov. 14 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at 92 Sunset Avenue in Westhampton Beach, across from the Westhampton Beach Fire Department. OLA of Eastern Long Island is urging residents to come to the Southampton Town Board’s Nov. 12 meeting at 1 p.m. at Town Hall to “speak out about ICE." Find Out More.

• The race for Riverhead Town Supervisor, in which Democrat Jerry Halpin had a 21-vote lead over incumbent Republican Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard after the election night tally, will now go to a hand recount, as required by New York State election law. We're expecting that process to take several weeks.

• The Southold Town Board has approved a series of changes to its wetlands code that were pitched by the Southold Town Trustees, who oversee development near the town’s shorelines, earlier this summer, in response to thorny issues that have arisen during its processing of permits for structures within 100 feet of wetlands. • The Southold Fire Department is conducting a food drive through tomorrow, Nov. 11. Shelf-stable food products, paper products and personal hygiene items may be dropped off in the pickup truck outside the main firehouse on the Main Road in Southold daily between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

• The Cutchogue Civic Association will host a panel discussion around the issue of food surplus, food rescue and food insecurity on the East End on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Free Library. Find Out More.

• The East Quogue Fire Department at 465 Montauk Highway in East Quogue hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive today from 1 to 7 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.

Have you ever had a Gazoz? This is not a Dr. Suess question but it is a family-friendly one. Down at Panoramica in Peconic, thanks to a new collaboration with jam-maker and pollinator aficionado Laura Klahre, this fizzy drink sweetened with a brand new flavor of jam took off this weekend. Find Out More.
