Emergency Actions on Food Security, Shinnecock Bridge Repairs to Last At Least a Week, Greenport BID Explores Running Maritime Festival

• We're expecting mostly cloudy skies today, with a 60 percent chance of showers, increasing throughout the afternoon, with a light south wind increasing to 5 to 10 miles per hour in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. We're expecting sunny skies and a west wind on Tuesday, with a high near 58, and mostly sunny skies on Wednesday, with a high near 63.

As the federal government was set to freeze the SNAP food assistance program relied on by 42 million Americans as of Nov. 1, local governments here began taking emergency actions last week to shore up support for food pantries on the East End. Read More.

• After erosion last week surrounding the supports holding up Sunrise Highway's bridge over the Shinnecock Canal, state officials announced that repairs began Saturday morning "and are expected to last approximately one week. In the meantime, westbound traffic on MYS Route 27(Sunrise Highway) will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of the bridge and shifted to the left shoulder. Motorists should also expect intermittent shoulder closures on Canal Road (County Route 39B), in the vicinity of the bridge.” Find Out More.

• The Greenport Business Improvement District is forming a steering committee of BID members and community leaders to explore organizing the 2026 Maritime Festival, after the East End Seaport Museum announced last Thursday that it is pausing the event. The first meeting of the steering committee will be held on Monday, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Little Red School House on the corner of Front Street and First Street. The BID says "anyone with a constructive view or opinion is invited to attend."

• The Westhampton Beach High School at 49 Lilac Lane in Westhampton Beach holds a New York Blood Center blood drive today from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.
