Water Authority Customers Urged to Immediately Conserve, Southold Reconsiders Zoning Update Suggestions, Composting Equipment Discounts, Arts Talks on Saturday

At the Races, Wednesday, New Suffolk

Good Morning!

• We're expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature in the mid-80s and a light southwest wind becoming south 8 to 13 miles per hour. It will be mostly clear overnight, with a low around 73. Friday will be sunny, with a high near 92 but heat index values as high as 99. A Heat Advisory is in effect Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. We're expecting partly sunny skies on Saturday, with a high near 85.

• The Suffolk County Water Authority issued a Stage 1 Water Alert Wednesday, July 23 for all 1.2 million customers it serves. “We need our customers to take immediate action to reduce their water use,” said SCWA Chairman of the Board Charlie Lefkowitz in a media alert Wednesday morning. “Water is a limited resource, especially during peak summer demand, and we need to ensure there’s enough available for critical needs like fire protection.” Read More.

• As the Southold Town Board begins to digest comments it received on a first draft of its Zoning Update earlier this summer, the board seems inclined, at the urging of the business community, to reverse the draft’s removal of several uses from a new zoning district it had created to prevent the outward sprawl of hamlet centers. The Town Board discussed the possibilities at its work session Tuesday. Read More.

Suffolk County Vector Control will be conducting aerial spraying, via helicopter, of numerous areas throughout the county with VectoPrime and Altosid to control mosquito larvae through July 25 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Here are the details.

East Hampton’s orders must be made online here by today for delivery to the town on July 26. Southold’s orders must be made online here by July 25 for delivery July 26.

Two great arts events are being held this Saturday afternoon on the North Fork, but you'll probably have to pick just one to go to. They're being held at just about the same time:

• The women of East End Arts' DETOUR VI exhibition, curated by Glen Hansen, join in conversation with Heart of the East End Host Gianna Volpe at the East End Arts Gallery on East Main Street in Riverhead at 1 p.m. Find Out More.

• North Fork Contemporary will also hold an intimate panel discussion, “A Look at Creative Leadership” on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Jamesport Meeting House. The panel will feature James Snyder, Executive Director of The Jewish Museum; Andrea Grover, Executive Director of Guild Hall; and Emilia Kabakov, artist and curator. Find Out More.
