The Bay Feels Its Ropes
Good Morning!
• We’re expecting sunny skies today, with a high near 92 but heat index values as high as 100. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, and an Air Quality Health Advisory has also been issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation due to ozone. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, later today, mainly after 5 p.m. Winds will be out of the southwest at 7 to 11 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 21 mph. It will be mostly sunny on Saturday, with a high near 85, and mostly cloudy on Sunday, with a high near 84 and a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms after 5 p.m.
• Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski gave his annual State of the Town Address Thursday evening at Peconic Landing in Greenport. After a half-hour overview of town projects and accomplishments, he was peppered by the audience with questions about proposed changes to the town’s zoning update, coastal erosion, upgrading of septic systems and the town’s fragile aquifer. • Because it is just one of two west-to-east thoroughfares running down the peninsula of the North Fork, Route 48 is considered critical emergency infrastructure for the Town of Southold. Suffolk County has just earmarked money for 2026 to begin studying how to raise the road to protect it from coastal flooding. Read More.
• Rural & Migrant Ministry, an outreach program to farm workers formed in 1981 by a consortium of New York State churches, has been a part of the East End’s support network for immigrant workers here for decades. This Sunday at Orient Congregational Church, the organization is planning a sermon and informational session to get their message of empathy through to Long Islanders who may not be familiar with their work. • The North Fork Action Center, a community group looking to protect democracy, holds its monthly meeting this afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House at 51900 Main Road in Southold. All are welcome.
• Northeast Stage’s summer Shakespeare weekend in Greenport’s Mitchell Park begins this evening. The company will be performing the tragedy “Othello” at 7 p.m. this evening through Sunday. Here’s More Info. This Saturday and Sunday, Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island will also prevent William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Find Out More.
• The Long Island Aquarium and NY Marine Rescue Center hosts its annual Paddle Battle, a day of races and casual paddle to help raise money for the not-for-profit NY Marine Rescue Center to save the endangered sea turtles in our local waters on Saturday morning, July 26 in the Peconic River.
