Blind, Heat
Good Morning!
• The National Weather Service is warning of an enhanced threat of flash flooding this afternoon into this evening, with a widespread 1” to 2” of rain likely during times of thunderstorms on eastern Long Island and in southern Connecticut. They’re saying there could be as much as 3″ of rain locally, with most of the rain falling in a 3 to 6 hour period. A flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. this afternoon into 2 p.m. Friday. The National Weather Service says there’s a 5 to 15 percent chance of “isolated to scattered instances of flash flooding of urban, poor drainage, and low-lying areas, as well as along quick responding rivers, streams and creeks.”
• Otherwise, we’re expecting partly sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 83 degrees and an east wind 6 to 10 miles per hour. The overnight low will be around 64, and we’re expecting showers to continue on Friday, with a high near 73 degrees. Saturday will be sunny, with a high near 80.
• A Suffolk County Supreme Court judge has struck down portions of Riverhead Town’s zoning rules regulating where cannabis dispensaries can be located, in the case of Tink & E, et al. v. Town of Riverhead, et al. The decision, filed on July 29, rules that state law supersedes the town’s restriction on cannabis dispensaries to 1,000 feet from a residential use, the town’s exemption for properties along commercial corridors and a minimum distance of 2,500 feet between dispensaries. This decision could pave the way for a dispensary in the former Suffolk County National Bank branch on Ostrander Avenue just north of Route 58, barring a successful appeal of the decision by Riverhead Town.
