Riverhead's Litter Critter, Ragtime and A Reminder of the North Fork's History

Good Morning!

• We're expecting mostly cloudy skies this morning, gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 91 and heat index values as high as 99, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. and a southwest wind 5 to 9 miles per hour. There's an air quality alert for ground level ozone in effect from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. It will be mostly cloudy overnight, with a low around 71 and a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms continues into Wednesday, when the high will be near 85 degrees. Thursday will be cloudy, with a high near 81 degrees and a 40 percent chance of showers.

• The Town of Southold is holding a ceremony this morning at 8 a.m. to dedicate a historic roadside marker commemorating Elymas Reeve at the intersection of Main Road and Mill Lane in Mattituck. Mr. Reeve, who began life as an enslaved man in Southold Town, secured his freedom in 1813. 

• The Riverhead Town Board is unveiling a new Downtown Litter Critter, a wire sculpture bottle collector at the intersection of Main Street and Griffing Avenue at 10 a.m. today. If you're downtown, come by and throw in your bottles and cans!

• Former U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman will be speaking this evening at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalists of Southold, 51900 Main Road, Southold Meeting Hall, hosted by the North Fork Action Center. Find Out More.

• The East Hampton Library hosts a screening of the 1981 film adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s novel “Ragtime,” an exploration of America at the turn of the 20th Century, this evening at 6 p.m. in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of the novel. On Sunday, July 13, singer-songwriter Caroline Doctorow, E.L. Doctorow’s daughter, will also give concert and discuss the novel at the library at 2 p.m. Register at The Adult Reference Desk , call 631.324.0222 ext.3, or register through Eventbrite.

Souled Out performs this evening at 7 p.m. at the free Concerts on the Green series at the corner of Lewis Road and Montauk Highway in East Quogue. All are welcome to attend this free Tuesday evening series.

• The Southold Town Board will discuss special events, the dedication of Town Beach in Greenport to Lt. George R. Sullivan on July 22 at 4 p.m. and the town's cell service draft plan at its 9 a.m. work session this morning. There are no public hearings scheduled for its 7 p.m. meeting this evening.
