On ICE Detention & Caravan of Empathy, A Blood Drive Remembers Brooks McEwen, Bake an Onion Galette

Cross-Sound, In the Fog
Good Morning!
• There's a 60 percent chance of showers this morning, mainly before 8 a.m., with skies gradually becoming mostly sunny, a high temperature near 75 degrees, and a northeast wind 16 to 18 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 30 mph. It will be mostly clear overnight, with a low around 57. Saturday will be sunny, with a high near 81, and Sunday will be sunny, with a high near 83.
• Southold Councilman Greg Doroski weighs in this week on the ICE operation Saturday in Greenport, in which agents detained one individual who had a final deportation order, and one who did not.
"We still do not have clarity on the identity or current status of the second individual reportedly taken into custody," he writes: "If local law enforcement is unaware of who has been detained, how can we adequately respond to a missing persons report? This lack of communication presents a serious gap in our ability to serve and protect the public." Read More.
• Rural & Migrant Ministry's Caravan of Empathy throughout the East End will be held tomorrow, with a few updates — the Southold stop has been moved to Southold's First Presbyterian Church and the Riverhead stop has been shifted later to accommodate traffic on the South Fork. Here are the details.
• This evening is a street fair smorgasbord on the North Fork. Tonight is Alive on 25 in Downtown Riverhead from 5 to 9 p.m., and First Fridays on Love Lane in Mattituck from 6 to 9 p.m.
• The 'Sleeves Up 4 Brooks McEwen' blood drive, in partnership with the New York Blood Center, will be held this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 51900 Main Road in Southold. You can sign up here, or walk in to give blood in honor of Ms. McEwen, a longtime community volunteer who passed away last week after a courageous battle with a rare form of leukemia.
• A galette is an unstructured pastry tart that can be filled with all manner of vegetables, or with fruit for a dessert version. In this month's Peconic Dish, Beacon columnist Alison Boyd-Savage whips up a wonderful uncured onion tart. Get the Recipe in our sister publication, The Peconic Dish.
• The Beacon's August print edition will be on newsstands throughout the East End by mid-day today. Pick up a copy at any of these locations today!
