Southold Talks Housing & Zoning, Riverhead Water Hearing, Grants Awarded to Struggling Organizations, Beyond Bees

Good Morning!

• We're expecting mostly sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 76 degrees and an east wind 7 to 10 miles per hour. It will be partly cloudy overnight, with a low around 58. Wednesday will be partly sunny, with a high near 78 and a 20 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. We're expecting mostly sunny skies on Thursday, with a high near 79.

• This is a time of great need among non-profits throughout the world and across the East End, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork is again working to meet the need this year with its High Impact Community Outreach grants, which in late July awarded $50,000 to six local non-profits for work reflecting today's economic and political realities. • The Southold Town Board is slated to begin its work session at 11:30 this morning, after an executive session involving labor and contracts. On the public agenda are discussions on the town's new housing department, recommendations from the town's Zoning Update Advisory Committee, updates from the Economic Development Committee, the feasibility of a YMCA in Southold, the North Fork water pipeline and irrigation legislation and the Sept. 27 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Greenport. The board has no public hearings scheduled for its 7 p.m. regular meeting this evening. • The Riverhead Town Board holds a public hearing this evening at 6 p.m. on a “Monroe Balancing Test” to determine whether the Suffolk County Water Authority is exempt from local zoning rules in its plan to run the North Fork Pipeline from Flanders to the Southold Town line, mostly along roads within Riverhead Town. The board will also hear from the public on a proposed one-year moratorium on cannabis retail establishments, after some of the town's cannabis zoning rules were recently struck down in court. • The East Hampton Town Board discusses the Project MOST after-school program, the Phoenix House recovery center, grants and proposed legislation regarding affordable multiple residences at its 11 a.m. work session this morning at town hall. • The Southampton Fire Department at 470 Hampton Road in Southampton holds a New York Blood Center blood drive today from Noon to 6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.

• On this Friday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m., the North Fork Environmental Council will host Beyond Bees: The World of Alternative Pollinators, a lively and informative presentation led by Lilla Chicco, NFEC's Summer intern, whose passion for environmental stewardship is matched only by her enthusiasm for the Flower Fly and other overlooked pollination powerhouses.
