Erin's Surf, Water Alert, A Letter to Your Future Self

Good Morning!
• High surf and rip current advisories are in effect for the rest of the week due to Hurricane Erin churning in the Atlantic Ocean. The high surf advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. today through 8 p.m. Friday, "with large breaking waves of 7 to 11 feet expected in the surf zone Wednesday, 12 to 16 feet Thursday, and 6 to 10 feet Friday" according to the National Weather Service, which also warns that, through Friday evening, "life-threatening rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf." Southampton Town will prohibit swimming at town ocean beaches today, which "may be extended as necessary." East Hampton Town issued an advisory on social media Tuesday that "surf conditions are becoming dangerous. Please pay close attention to lifeguard flags and all posted signs at Town beaches — including beach closures or No Swimming instructions."
• There's a 40 percent chance of showers today, with thunderstorms also possible after 5 p.m., with partly sunny skies and a a high temperature near 75 degrees, with an east wind 7 to 13 miles per hour. There's a 60 percent chance of overnight showers and thunderstorms, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 62. Thursday will be partly sunny and breezy, with a high near 77 degrees and a 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 8 a.m. Friday will be sunny, with a high near 82.
• The Suffolk County Water Authority announced late Tuesday that, while its Stage 1 Water Alert remains in effect, its request last week that all customers refrain entirely from lawn watering is now lifted. The Water Authority is asking its customers to continue to follow odd/even irrigation schedules, only irrigating their lawn on even days if they have an even street number, or on odd days if have an odd street number. "We still have many weeks of summer ahead, when water demand is at its highest, so it is important we all remain vigilant," they said in their announcement. • As a lesson for one of his English classes in middle school, some 50 years ago, there was an exercise in which each of Beacon columnist Dave Davis's classmates were required to write “a letter to your future self” and store it in a place where it wouldn’t be forgotten. • The Amagansett Free Library hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.

• The North Fork Action Center, which works to protect the U.S. Constitution, work toward justice, civic engagement, evidence-based science, diversity and a free press, hosts BFFF = Bring Finger Food and a Friend, on Friday, Aug. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. The group will share food and thoughts, and everyone will get a chance to make more connections within our community.
