Coastal Flood Warning, Southampton State of Emergency, Riverhead Water Fight, Southold Zoning Committee Gets to Work

Good Morning!
• As the National Weather Service issued Coastal Flood warnings on Wednesday in advance of the expected storm surge from Hurricane Erin, Southampton Town issued a State of Emergency beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday. While the storm is not expected to make landfall on Eastern Long Island, the National Weather Service had initially issued a High Surf Advisory on Tuesday evening that is expected to last through 8 p.m. Friday, and a High Rip Current Risk, also through Friday evening. On Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Southeastern Suffolk County from 5 p.m. Thursday through 3 a.m. Friday, and a Coastal Flood Advisory from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. • Other than the monster hurricane off our shores, we're expecting mostly cloudy skies today, with a high temperature near 75 degrees and a northeast wind 17 to 21 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 32 mph. It will be mostly cloudy overnight, with a low around 60. We're expecting sunny skies on Friday and Saturday, with highs near 83 degrees.
• The Suffolk County Water Authority and Riverhead Town seem ready for a fight over Riverhead’s assertion that the water company will need town permits to place an 8.5-mile stretch of water main through town roads en route to Southold, and Southold is ready to back up its neighboring town. • As the Southold Town Planning Department weighs the voluminous amount of public comments received earlier this summer on the first draft of a rewrite of the town’s zoning code, the town’s Zoning Update Advisory Committee is embarking on a deep dive into how that code will work in real life. Some members of the ZUAC, made up of volunteers from the community with expertise in land use, affordable housing, local business and building design, gave an update on its current work to the Southold Town Board at its Aug. 19 work session. • The Southampton Town Board is slated to discuss affordable housing code amendments at its 10 a.m. work session this morning. Here's the agenda, and the meeting can be viewed live on Sea-TV's YouTube channel.
• The Riverhead Cider House at 2711 Sound Avenue will host a New York Blood Center blood drive today from 1 to 7 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.
• The Riverhead Town Board will discuss policy action items from the town's Agricultural Advisory Committee, a special permit and site plan for the proposed Duffy MX Motocross Track at 2822 River Road in Calverton and monthly reports from the town's police department, justice court, code enforcement and town clerk at its 10 a.m. work session this morning.
