Labor Day Battle of the Bands, Cars & Crafts for the Boy Scouts, To Build a Cardboard Boat...

Good Morning!
• We're expecting partly sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 79 degrees and a south wind 7 to 10 miles per hour, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. It will be partly cloudy overnight, with a low around 56. Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day are expected to be sunny, with highs near 76 each day.
• The lineup for the Labor Day Battle of the Bands in Greenport's Mitchell Park is now set. From 6 to 9 p.m., Daydream will perform rock & pop music, followed by the R&B and soul of Swann Live, the high energy rock of the Seismatics and the rock, country and blues of Sweet Ride. In case of rain, the battle will be held in the Greenport American Legion Skating Rink at 102 Third Street. This village-sponsored event is free of charge — bring a lawn chair or a blanket.
• It's stressful for anyone to have to visit the Emergency Room, but Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead is working this month to make an ER visit a little less uncomfortable for kids. Read More.
• Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aquebogue hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive on Saturday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.
• The 35th Annual Boy Scouts Troop 6 Car Show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peconic Lane Community Center. Find Out More. The Greenport Boy Scouts are also hosting a craft fair, with 60 vendors, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Greenport School at 720 Front Street.
• Peconic Landing's annual free end of summer concert and fireworks show for the community will be held on Sunday, Aug. 31 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Brecknock Hall, 1 Brecknock Road in Greenport. Find Out More.
• Registration is now open and you have plenty of time to build a boat for the Greenport Maritime Festival Cardboard Regatta on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. Here's the registration form, and here are some of our (maybe???) helpful tips for building a cardboard boat.
• The Beacon's September print edition will be on newsstands throughout the East End by mid-day today. Pick up a copy at any of these newsstands.
