Tumbleweeds, Farms of the Future, Showing Up for Our Home

At Summer’s End…
Good Morning!
Happy Tumbleweed Tuesday!!! (Yes, we know we've been instructed to brand today Tourism Tuesday....there will be plenty of time for that when the pumpkins are ready to be picked.)

Bridgehampton, Tumbleweed Tuesday, 2016... This is a real holiday, with its own EEB mascot.
• We're expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 75 degrees and a northeast wind 6 to 8 miles per hour. We're expecting partly cloudy skies tonight, with a low around 52. Wednesday and Thursday will be sunny, with highs in the high 70s.
• We’ve lost countless volunteers in our communities in the years since Covid. At a recent funeral for one person who worked her whole life to make Southold a better place, we were told that hundreds of people who gave so much of their lives to the community had left or died in the past five years, and that’s in Southold alone. How can we keep their spirit in our hearts and in our actions every day? Read our September editorial.
• From the wonders of Mattituck Mushrooms to wild pollinator-supporting jam from Blossom Meadow Farm to riots of colorful flowers at the North Fork Flower Farm to the organic beef at McCall Wines, nurseries specializing in native plants, and a growing chorus of young farmers steeped in biodynamic practices learned from the experts at KK’s The Farm, it’s little secret that the North Fork is a paradise for foodies and gardeners. What may be more of a secret is the philosophy behind the variety of methods practiced by farmers here, and the communities and knowledge networks which, like the threads of fungal mycelium that pervade the soil, provide the crucial communication necessary for a farming community to thrive. As harvest season begins this weekend, we take a look at the history of innovative farming practices on the North Fork and the Farms of the Future that are making the region a hotbed of agricultural innovation. Read More.
• With Farms of the Future in mind, consider attending the North Fork Foodie Tour this Sunday, Sept. 7. Here's more info, and have a look at their auction supporting the North Fork Reform Synogogue.
• This Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m., Strongpoint Theinert Ranch is holding its annual Ferry Cruise to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of Shelter Island 1LT Joseph “Joey” Theinert aboard the South Ferry vessel dedicated in his honor, while supporting a great veteran support organization created in his honor.
