Patriot Begins To Remove Material from Calverton Nursery, Talking About the Climate, Visiting Vessels & Walk to End Alzheimer's

Good Morning!
• We're expecting showers and possibly a thunderstorm today, with patchy fog before 11 a.m. and a high temperature near 75 degrees, with a south wind 7 to 13 mile per hour. Showers will continue overnight, with a low around 64. Skies are expected to gradually clear on Friday, with a high near 79. Saturday will be partly sunny, with a high near 76.
• Tractor trailers from Patriot Recycling could be seen arriving at the Youngs Avenue entrance of a former nursery in Calverton on Monday, after Riverhead Town announced Friday that it had reached an agreement with the owner of the property to remove the material beginning Sept. 22. Read More.
• The Southold Town Board meets in private executive session this morning, followed by a work session expected to begin at 1 p.m. at which they're slated to discuss housing policy and procedures, changes to the town code regarding maximum house size, an update on the town's CPF project plan and proposed changes to the town's zoning use table and wetland code. • The Southampton Town Board will discuss its traffic pilot program at its 10 a.m. work session this morning. Here's the agenda, and the meeting can be viewed live on Sea-TV's YouTube channel.
• The Greenport Village Board of Trustees has held open last Thursday’s public hearing on a new rental code requiring permits for short-term rentals — residents will have a chance to weigh in again on the proposed code this evening at 6 p.m. at the Third Street Firehouse. • The Westhampton Beach Fire Department at 92 Sunset Avenue hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive today from 1 to 7 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made here.
• The Cutchogue Civic Association will hold a presentation on “Climate Change, Up Close and Personal: Local Stories” this evening at 6 p.m. at the Peconic Community School in Cutchogue. Speakers include farmer Tom Wickham, Ron Goerler of Jamesport Vineyards & Early Rising Farm and Dennis Schrader of Landcraft Garden. Find Out More.
• In the climate vein, writer and environmental activist Bill McKibben is at East Hampton's Guild Hall this Sunday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. to discuss his new book, "Here Comes the Sun, A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization," in a program presented with The Peter Mattheissen Center. • Festivals! The OLA Latino Film Festival continues this evening at 6 p.m. with "Reinas (Queens)," a Peruvian family drama, at the North Fork Arts Center in Greenport. And the Sag Harbor American Music Festival kicks off this evening.
• The North Fork Walk To End Alzheimer’s at Peconic Landing is this Saturday, Sept. 27, and the organizers are close to reaching their goal to raise money to support The Alzheimer’s Association’s community support, research and advocacy work. Find Out More about how you can help the effort.
• If you missed your chance to see the vessels visiting Greenport during the Maritime Festival, don't worry — they're still in town. The replica historic oyster boat Ida May is hosting an oyster farm tour and tasting cruise with Peeko Oysters tomorrow, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 4 from 3 to 6 p.m., leaving from the Mitchell Park Marina in Greenport. (Tickets $150, are available online here). The historic New York City Fireboat Fire Fighter, docked at Mitchell Park's East Pier, will be offering free tours on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find Out More.
