North Fork Short Term Rentals, Riverhead Sets Vail-Leavitt Hearing, Behind the Headlines

Good Morning!
• We're expecting mostly sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 76 degrees and a northeast wind 5 to 8 miles per hour. It will be mostly cloudy overnight, with a low around 59. We're expecting mostly cloudy skies on Tuesday, with a high near 77, and sunny skies on Wednesday, with a high near 69.
• After receiving a smattering of comment Thursday evening, Sept. 25, the Greenport Village Board has closed a public hearing on a proposed new code requiring permits for short-term rentals. Board members said they expect to discuss the comments from the public hearings at their next work session Oct. 16 before holding a vote. Meanwhile, Southold Town has postponed a code committee meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 30, to discuss a first draft of its new short-term rental code. Read More.
• The Riverhead Town Board holds a special meeting at 9 a.m. today to present the town's 2026 budget and to set an Oct. 16 public hearing at 4 p.m. on whether to deem The Jazz Loft qualified and eligible to purchase and redevelop the historic Vail-Leavitt Music Hall, which the town recently reacquired from the non-profit that had been responsible for its care. • The Greenport American Legion at 102 Third Street hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.
