North Fork Shows Up for Alzheimer's, 343 Ride & FDNY Fireboat Return, See Farms of the Future

• We're expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 80 degrees and a south wind 6 to 13 miles per hour. It will be mostly clear overnight, with a low around 66. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 81 and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., And Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 73 and a 50 percent chance of showers.

• The race to find treatments and possibly a cure for Alzheimer's Disease has taken on new urgency as the Baby Boom generation begins to age — the number of U.S. deaths from dementia increased 142 percent between 2000 and 2022, and in Suffolk County alone 30,500 people are suffering from this disease. On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Alzheimer's Association — the top non-profit funder of Alzheimer's research in the world — will hold its third annual Walk to End Alzheimer's at the Peconic Landing retirement community in Greenport. • The FDNY's 343 Ride will once again be hitting the road in 2025 for a two-day cycling event on Sunday, Sept. 7 and Monday, Sept. 8. The ride, named for the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, will leave Ground Zero on Sunday at 7 a.m. and finish the day at the Baiting Hollow Country Club in Riverhead, NY.  Anticipated arrival of the cyclists will be at 3:30 p.m.  There will be food and beverages, a raffle, and entertainment. Day two will see the riders leaving Riverhead and ending at the Montauk Lighthouse. • The retired FDNY fireboat Fire Fighter, a storied city fireboat that led the marine response to the terrorist attack on World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, will be back in Greenport Sept. 11 through Sept. 30. Read More.

• This Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m., Strongpoint Theinert Ranch is holding its annual Ferry Cruise to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of Shelter Island 1LT Joseph “Joey” Theinert aboard the South Ferry vessel dedicated in his honor, while supporting a great veteran support organization created in his honor. Find Out More.

• Paul Kreiling of the East End Seaport Museum will discuss “Bug Lighthouse: Past and Future” at the East Marion Community Association’s monthly meeting on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. at the East Marion Firehouse. Find Out More.

• The Southold Peconic Civic Association hosts The Peconic Estuary Partnership for a discussion on “Upgrade Your Septic System” on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. at Southold Town's Peconic Lane Community Center. Find Out More.
