East Hampton To Remove Lazy Point Stilt House After Collapse Last Weekend

East Hampton Town announced Thursday that the town is taking emergency action to remove the storm-damaged “stilt house” on Mulford Lane in Lazy Point, an iconic much-photographed building that had long stood on pilings in the water as coastal erosion took its toll on the shoreline.

ICE Returns to Greenport, Taking Three Men

Three North Fork men who are supporting their families (including a newborn child), were taken from Greenport this morning in a raid by federal agents, said Minerva Perez, Executive Director of OLA of Eastern Long Island Wednesday morning.

Ms. Perez said the men had lived and worked in the community for more than 20 years, they do not have criminal records, and their families do not know at this time where they are. OLA is working to ensure the families have what they need while they attempt to find their loved ones.

OLA runs a Rapid Response Network of residents who document ICE activity on the East End, and Ms. Perez said Rapid Responders had observed vehicles carrying agents heading westbound from Riverhead on the Long Island Expressway after the men were detained in Greenport.

Southold Begins Work on Short-Term Rental Code

A 2024 proposal to issue permits for short-term rentals and to cap their number at 1 percent of the housing stock in Southold Town could soon go before the community for a public hearing, as the town works to regulate an industry the town believes generates $25 million in revenue for property owners here each year.

Short-term rentals of less than 14 days have been illegal in Southold Town since 2015, but the town has since found the ban difficult to enforce.

Viewpoint: Ejected From Their Homes

When the landlord threw his daughter’s tricycle in the trash, Juan knew he would be evicted. As Maria pleaded for more time to find a new rental, her landlady said a relative would be arriving to occupy the house any day, which turned out to be a lie.

Lucia and her partner, faced with a rent that doubled overnight, knew they could no longer stay in the studio they had fixed up six months earlier.

Jordan’s landlord explained that his apartment needed renovating and that he and his roommate would have to go.
