East End Food Hub Gearing Up to Reopen

Things have seemed a little bit quiet lately at the East End Food Hub site at the gateway to Riverhead, but that’s about to change.

The non-profit East End Food received a temporary Certificate of Occupancy from the Riverhead Town Building Department in late January, Interim Executive Director Kayla Barthelme has told The Beacon, and is planning to begin running pop-up programming in the space in March.

Don’t Quit on Greenport

Greenport is often called the heart of the North Fork. This tiny village is a rough-and-tumble place that, like seaports through the ages, has welcomed newcomers to its docks and stores and homes. Through boom and bust cycles driven by macro and micro-economic forces, the heartbeat of this village has always been the tough but compassionate people who call this place home — whether they were born here or not.

As many who love Greenport know and will tell you, the people here hold fast and they stay true. But this winter, Greenport needs all of our help.

Valentine For Climate Hope: We Can Do This, Despite This Week’s Setbacks

by Mary Morgan

A friend of mine told me about her two 20-something sons, very, very angry at the planet being left for them. I feel their pain. And I shared my story with her: for several years now, really over a decade, I’ve been a climate-worrier. I’ve been concerned (angry too!) that we are not moving away from fossil fuels into clean energy – hey, the big new exciting economy.

Auditions: Northeast Stage to Produce Innovative Works Honoring Women

The North Fork’s Northeast Stage, now helmed by the crew from Corchaug Rep, is returning to its roots this spring producing innovative works of theater that you might not otherwise have a chance to see.

The company is preparing for a mid-April run of three works by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Susan Glaspell, all of which highlight “what happens when you don’t consider women in a situation,” says Mark Heidemann, Co-Chair of Northeast Stage. Auditions are being held today, Feb. 15.

To the Editor:

I was really disturbed by your recent story about surveillance cameras on the East End of Long Island.

For anyone who thinks that surveillance cameras only identify bad guys and the rest of us have nothing to worry about, think again.
