After More Severe Erosion, What is the Future of Southold’s Town Beach?

The parking lot of Southold’s Town Beach, on the North Road overlooking the Long Island Sound, has been closed for several weeks as nature did what it does there, scouring the coastline, ripping up asphalt and making a mockery of the Town of Southold’s efforts to continue to restore the beach.

Connecting The Threads of Long Island’s Natural World

Tunnels for frogs under major roads. A friendly dog that sniffs out box turtles. Restoring horseshoe crab nesting areas along the Peconic Estuary. Exploring the true causes of trauma for endangered whales and the dangers rodent poison poses for raptors.

The Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University was packed on Feb. 26 with naturalists looking to find a way for an island synonymous with suburban sprawl to coexist with the natural world. Above are just a handful of examples of how.

The Town of Riverhead has announced that it has received a decision from Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice David Reilly granting the town’s motion to dismiss 16 of the 17 claims made by Calverton Aviation & Technology (CAT) over the town’s cancellation of its controversial sale of much of the Enterprise Park at Calverton to CAT.

Soloviev Revamps Colusa Subdivision & Submits Another Cutchogue Project

Stefan Soloviev’s Crossroads Atlantic LLC submitted a revamped plan for their massive Colusa conservation subdivision in Cutchogue in mid-February, making most of the changes recommended by Southold’s Planning Director last October and setting the project on a path that will soon include a public hearing.

Fifty-Four Acre CPF Preservation Proposed on the North Road

A 54-acre swath of woods along a rural stretch of Route 48 between Southold and Greenport, which the owners say could be subdivided into as many as 24 building lots, could soon be added to a complex of preserved ecologically sensitive land.

Words

It’s not spring yet, but I can’t
wait anymore. I get the hoe,
pull back the snow from the old
furrows, expose the rich dark earth.
I bare my hand and dole out shriveled peas,
one by one.
