The history of the conservation movement on the East End is filled with photos of volunteers from Group for the East End and other environmental organizations raising osprey nesting platforms alongside creeks and bays here, in the hopes of enticing this once-endangered bird to a safe place to raise their young.

East Hampton to Use Offshore Wind Fund to Offset Federal Shortfall for Montauk Inlet Dredging

East Hampton’s windfall from the South Fork Wind Farm is being used by the town to commence a much-needed federal dredging of the inlet to Lake Montauk, the biggest commercial fishing port in New York State.

According to East Hampton Town, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ bids to perform the long-planned Lake Montauk Harbor Navigation Improvement Project this fall came in $1.1 million higher than expected, and the agency informed the town it would need $1.1 million by Sept. 10 in order to go forward with the dredging, which can only be done between Oct. 15 and Jan. 15.

Survey: Southolders Want Better Cell Service, Despite Visual Impact of Towers

More than 770 people weighed in during Southold Town’s recent community survey regarding cellular service, and while many said they would prefer the towers to be concealed, most said that their top priority is better coverage.

Southold Remembers September 11

Led by members of the Greenport Fire Department, a hefty crew of North Fork volunteer firefighters also took their annual six-mile hike, in full turnout gear, from the Greenport Firehouse to the memorial service. The walk took more than three hours.

Sag Harbor Partnership Working to Restore Firemen’s Museum

The Sag Harbor Partnership announced a fundraising campaign this week to restore the Sag Harbor Firemen’s Museum on Church Street, a Sag Harbor Fire Department building which in the 1970s had been converted to a museum showcasing the history of the oldest fire department in New York State.

East End school board members, PTA leaders, parents, residents, and high school students who are newly serving this school year as ex-officio school board trustees are all invited to the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island and North Fork’s free forum titled “School Boards, the Training Wheels of Democracy: What You Should Know and How to Get Involved” on Thursday, Sept. 18 at LTV Studios in Wainscott.
