“Taxation Without Transportation is Tyranny:” The North Fork Seeks More Trains

Led by Suffolk County Legislator Greg Doroski, a new effort is afoot to pressure the New York State Legislature to provide funding for more train service to the North Fork.

Mr. Doroski and leaders from the Southold Town and Greenport Village Boards are sending a letter to New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie urging the state to expand service on the Greenport Branch of the Long Island Rail Road.

New Urgency in Riverhead Effort for OLA Safety Measure

In what is becoming almost a weekly occurrence, federal agents returned to Riverhead Friday afternoon in a rapid series of raids that reportedly included a foot chase that led to the detention of a man near the Riverhead Library, and the questioning of two fifth graders on their way to Pulaski Street School.

The reports of students being questioned by someone in a dark SUV with blacked-out windows galvanized Minerva Perez, executive director of OLA of Eastern Long Island, a Latino advocacy group that has been working to get local governments here to sign on to legislation outlining how local law enforcement can protect public safety during ICE raids.

A crowd of ICE Out protesters, led by Anita Boyer, took to the streets of Riverhead again on Saturday, marching from Town Hall through downtown Riverhead and up the steps of the Suffolk County courthouse on Griffing Avenue.

Community Matters, Above All Else

by Southold Councilwoman Anne H. Smith, Ed.D.

How do we help our neighbors through the lens of humanity and friendship? Southold is a place where we come together as neighbors during a crisis or when there is a cumulative impact on basic needs. We are living through a significant time of uncertainty and, for many, fear.
