Getting Your Sea Legs and Building a Tool of Peace: Two Views of the Eagle’s Mission

Captain Kristopher Ensley (left) and Ryan Harned of Cutchogue (right) aboard The Eagle Friday morning.

Over the course of a summer, about 300 “swabs” — new recruits at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. — get their sea legs aboard the 295-foot three-masted square rigger Eagle.

Three groups of about 90 cadets just out of high school get a chance to crew the Eagle after about four to six weeks at the Academy. It’s a crash course in teamwork, leadership and taking responsibility for the safety of your fellow cadets.

When the Eagle pulled into Greenport Friday morning, one swab on deck knew the familiar sights and sounds of home.

Southold: We’re Not Planning Down Payment Assistance for $2 Million Houses

The fine print in a recent update to Southold Town’s proposed down payment assistance program for first-time homebuyers has been the talk of the town this week, after another local media outlet reported a new cap on the purchase price of the homes would be $1.9 million — up from an initial proposal of $750,000.

But that’s not what the town is actually doing, says Southold Community Development Project Coordinator Andrea Sullivan.

Southold Takes Another Look at Coastal Resilience Planning

Southold Town is searching for ways to incorporate coastal resilience into its Zoning Update, after many residents asked that protecting the coastlines be made a priority.

After much public criticism of a planned massive overhaul of the town’s zoning code in 2025, the town’s Planning Department announced this spring that it is prioritizing changing certain aspects of the code that will have the greatest impact — community housing, changes to uses in business zoning districts, short-term rentals and changes to the town’s big house law are among the top priorities.
